Agra – Uttar Pradesh police have taken a woman into custody in connection with a violent episode that was reported almost 11 months ago in Barhan, Agra district. The charge stems from an alleged attack on her brother‑in‑law, who she is said to have targeted after he declined a marriage proposal for her sister.

Chronology of the Incident

The alleged assault is reported to have occurred on the night of 20 October 2025, shortly after Diwali celebrations. The victim, employed as a chemical assistant engineer at a cement plant in Haldwani, had returned home for the festival.

How the Attack Unfolded

According to the complaint, the engineer was sleeping outside the house after the Diwali puja when his sister‑in‑law summoned him to a bedroom around 2 a.m. Police allege that she then assaulted him with a sharp blade, inflicting serious wounds.

"His screams woke other family members, who rushed to his side. We arrived on the scene and transported him to SN Medical College, and later to AIIMS Delhi due to the gravity of his injuries," said a police spokesperson.

Search and Capture

Following the incident, the accused’s husband allegedly escorted her to her parental home in Etah. She subsequently vanished from the village and evaded police attempts to locate her.

After weeks of coordinated effort, investigators traced her to a relative’s house, where she was taken into custody.

DCP West Zone Aditya Singh confirmed that the medical report classified the victim’s injuries as severe and potentially fatal. Consequently, the police have upgraded the case to include an attempt‑to‑murder charge.

Investigation Ongoing

The police continue to probe the motives and circumstances surrounding the assault, and further legal proceedings are expected.
