New Delhi – Police have registered a case of alleged gang rape involving a 17‑year‑old girl in the Astha Kunj area close to Delhi’s Kalkaji Temple. Three suspects have been taken into custody, and one of them, 34‑year‑old Asif of Tughlakabad, was apprehended after a violent encounter with police and is currently receiving treatment at AIIMS Trauma Centre for a gunshot wound.
How the incident unfolded
According to the investigating officers, the victim visited Kalkaji Temple accompanied by a minor male friend. After completing their prayers, the pair entered Astha Kunj Park through Gate No 7. Three men approached them, identified themselves as policemen and began threatening the duo.
The assailants allegedly separated the teenager from her friend and led her to a secluded spot within the park. Witnesses claim Asif brandished a weapon and forced the girl into a sexual assault, while the other two men participated in the attack. After the crime, the trio fled the scene, leaving the victim and her friend in distress.
Police response and subsequent shootout
Alerted to the incident, officers from Amar Colony Police Station rushed to Astha Kunj. The girl was escorted to AIIMS for a medical examination, and forensic teams secured the area for evidence collection.
During the follow‑up investigation, police received intelligence that Asif was hiding near DM Office Road in Amar Colony. A cordon was set up, but Asif allegedly attempted to escape, opening fire and discharging three rounds at the police. One bullet struck the bullet‑proof jacket of Head Constable Rajesh.
“The officer acted in self‑defence; the return fire hit Asif’s leg, and he was immediately taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment,” the police spokesperson said.
The remaining two suspects have also been arrested, and a formal FIR has been lodged. Authorities have confirmed the victim’s age as between 16 and 17 years and have completed her medical examination. Further interrogation of the accused is ongoing to reconstruct the full sequence of events.
