Gorakhpur: The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) has broken up a suspected illegal firearms operation based in Gorakhpur, seizing a cache of guns and ammunition while taking a local suspect into custody.

Detention of the alleged middleman

The arrested individual has been identified as Ramesh Dutt Tripathi, who is also known by the aliases Bolbam, Abhishek Pandit and Chhotu. He originates from Vinayak Nagar in the Yamunanagar area, which falls under the Naini police station jurisdiction in Prayagraj. STF personnel stopped him as he waited for a contact in the Siktaur locality.

Seized evidence

During the operation, officers recovered multiple firearms, a substantial stock of ammunition, and the suspect’s mobile phone. All items have been placed under police custody while investigators work to trace their source and intended destinations.

Broader investigation in progress

Initial interrogations suggest the network may extend beyond Uttar Pradesh’s borders. The STF is now scrutinising Tripathi’s alleged collaborators, including a person identified as Rajeev Yadav, to map the full scope of the operation.

Authorities are also examining whether similar weapon consignments have previously entered Gorakhpur or nearby districts and whether additional operatives were involved.

CO Cantt Arun Kumar S. confirmed that a case has been filed against Tripathi under the Arms Act. Further legal steps will depend on the information uncovered during questioning and the ongoing investigation.

Next steps

The STF continues to verify the origin of the confiscated arms and to identify potential end‑users. Officials have warned that more arrests could follow as the probe develops.
