Lucknow — Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath hailed the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, describing it as a critical step toward strengthening India’s democracy.
Why Clean Voter Lists Are Crucial
Adityanath underscored that a trustworthy voter database forms the backbone of any free and fair election. He urged authorities to purge entries of deceased persons, permanent migrants and duplicate records, adhering strictly to the established guidelines.
Encouraging First‑Time Voters
Turning his focus to the nation’s newest electors, the chief minister appealed to anyone approaching or having just turned 18 to verify that their name appears on the roll. He argued that higher youth participation will deepen democratic engagement.
SIR Drive Under Political Scrutiny
The revision exercise has ignited debate, with opposition parties, student organisations and civil‑society groups warning that eligible voters might be unintentionally omitted. The Election Commission, however, has dismissed these concerns, insisting the process follows transparent, statutory procedures.
Calling for Citizen Participation
Concluding his address, the UP chief minister invited citizens to help create a clean, robust and transparent voter roll, positioning the SIR as a cornerstone of India’s democratic framework.
