Bettiah: State officials are accelerating assistance for those affected by the West Champaran floods, with plans to credit cash grants directly into beneficiaries' bank accounts ahead of the Dussehra festivities.
Rapidly Disbursed Financial Support
During a press briefing at his residence on Hospital Road, BJP MP Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal emphasized that every possible step is being taken to aid families and cultivators whose lives were upended by the recent deluge.
Crop Insurance Payouts for Affected Farmers
Landowners whose fields were inundated will receive compensation through the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. The state’s Agriculture Department is currently aggregating loss data to compute precise payouts. Jaiswal highlighted that the scheme, dormant in the district for almost ten years, has now been re‑activated.
Root Causes of the Flood Surge
The MP traced the catastrophe to a series of events that began with the failure of 13 dams along Nepal’s Trishuli River roughly a month ago. Subsequent three days of heavy rainfall caused river levels in both Bihar and Nepal to rise sharply. The compromised dams also funneled a massive wave of water into the Valmikinagar barrage, placing additional strain on local flood‑control structures.
Embankment Repair Operations Underway
After a leak was identified in a vulnerable embankment, the Water Resources Department’s secretary rushed to the site for an urgent evaluation. Within 24 hours, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary visited the affected villages, issued directives, and supervised the launch of repair work slated for completion by Saturday.
Review of Ongoing Development and Relief Measures
The briefing also covered the status of existing development projects in the area alongside the emergency relief actions. Attendees included Nautan MLA Narayan Prasad, BJP district president Roopak Srivastava, local leaders Ravi Singh and Manoj Singh, as well as several other party officials.
