Lucknow – After a detailed aerial and on‑ground assessment of water‑logged zones surrounding the capital, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a far‑reaching flood‑control strategy. The flagship component is a fresh embankment that will extend from Faizullaganj to Naimish, designed to curb the Gomti River’s frequent overflows.
Eco‑Friendly Embankment as a Dual‑Purpose Flood Barrier
The proposed structure will double as a green corridor, featuring a paved roadway atop the raised levee. Survey teams have been instructed to carry out a meticulous top‑down mapping of the Gomti’s banks and to prepare a full‑scale project dossier. Alongside the barrier, integrated drainage networks and pumping stations will channel rain‑water that accumulates beyond the protected zone, ensuring swift evacuation.
On‑Site Relief Evaluation
During a visit to the flood‑stricken area of Bakshi Ka Talab, the chief minister interacted with locals, inspected a medical camp, and supervised the distribution of emergency supplies. He ordered the relocation of families from high‑risk spots to temporary relief shelters set up in schools and marriage halls.
Assistance for Displaced Households
Camp administrators are now mandated to serve hot meals twice daily, provide milk for children, and offer nutrient‑rich rations for pregnant women. Livestock owners will receive fodder, while shelters lacking electricity will be equipped with solar lanterns and Petromax lamps.
Compensation Framework
Families that suffered loss of life due to drowning or lightning will be granted an immediate cash assistance of ₹4 lakh. Households whose homes were completely destroyed and meet eligibility criteria will be allotted houses under existing state housing schemes. Agricultural damages—both crops and livestock—will be evaluated so that eligible farmers can claim appropriate compensation.
Relief Kits Containing 26 Essentials
Each affected family receives a kit packed with 26 essential items, such as rice, wheat flour, potatoes, pulses, cooking oil, salt, spices and waterproofing material. The kits are intended to sustain families until regular supplies are restored.
Security and Medical Arrangements
The CM directed police, Home Guards, PRD staff and local watchmen to patrol the camps and vacated homes, safeguarding property and preventing looting. Health centers will keep anti‑snake‑venom and anti‑rabies injections ready, while dedicated medical and veterinary camps are being rolled out across the hardest‑hit locations.
Why This Year’s Floods Were So Severe
Intense rainfall over the Gomti’s upstream catchment—covering Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur and even adjoining Nepal—caused river levels to surge dramatically, submerging low‑lying districts around Lucknow. The Faizullaganj‑Naimish embankment is now positioned as a long‑term shield, promising not only flood mitigation but also improved connectivity via the road that will crown the levee.
