New Delhi – After a six‑year spell leading the Indian women’s side, veteran cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur announced on Tuesday that she will relinquish the captaincy in Tests, ODIs and T20Is to concentrate exclusively on her contributions as a player.
End of a Six‑Year Leadership Chapter
Now 37, Kaur has been the face of Indian women’s cricket, steering the team through five Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20 internationals. One of the highlights of her tenure arrived last month, when she helped India secure a second consecutive Asian Games gold medal in the women’s competition.
Her decision comes on the heels of the recent World Cup victory, providing a storybook close to a captaincy marked by both triumphs and trials.
Decision Shaped After BCCI Strategy Session
The announcement followed a strategic meeting in Guwahati that included Kaur, vice‑captain Smriti Mandhana, head coach Amol Muzumdar and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. The discussion centered on the long‑term roadmap for the women’s team, and Kaur’s subsequent statement adds a crucial piece to that transition plan.
Putting the Team Before Self
Reflecting on her captaincy, Kaur emphasized that she consistently prioritized the squad’s needs over personal ambition. She recalled making tough calls, weathering criticism, and always striving to build a more resilient unit.
She also spoke about creating space for emerging talent, acknowledging that not every decision would please everyone, but the overarching aim was the sustained health of the side.
From Setbacks to World Cup Glory
Kaur’s time as skipper blended difficult periods with landmark successes. While she endured defeats, intense scrutiny and pressure, she also experienced the pride of leading India on cricket’s biggest stage.
The crowning achievement was the World Cup triumph, a fitting bookend that underscores the significance of her stepping aside for the future of Indian women’s cricket.
She expressed confidence in the depth of the squad, believing the team possesses the talent and foundation required to keep advancing.
Career Continues Beyond the Armband
Giving up the captaincy does not equate to retirement. Kaur clarified that she remains available for international duty and intends to keep contributing on the field, driven by her enduring love for the game.
She thanked teammates, coaches, support staff, the BCCI, her family and fans for their unwavering support throughout her leadership journey.
While her era as India’s captain has drawn to a close, Kaur’s playing career is set to forge ahead, offering the side a seasoned performer in a refreshed role.
