Chandigarh. The Union Government has announced a revision of the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) wage threshold, lifting the mandatory ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month. This adjustment is projected to bring roughly two lakh additional workers in Punjab under the statutory social‑security framework.

Broader Coverage Across the Salary Spectrum

Under the new rule, any employee earning up to ₹25,000 a month will fall within the EPF ambit. In addition to the usual provident‑fund accrual, eligible staff will also gain access to pension and insurance schemes administered by the EPFO. Nationwide, the policy is expected to extend coverage to an extra 51 lakh workers.

Implications for Employers

Because EPF contributions are shared between employees and their employers, firms will now have to calculate higher dues for a larger pool of staff. This shift could add pressure to overall labour‑cost structures, especially for industries that already operate on thin margins.

What It Means for Workers

For many employees, the change translates into larger deductions from their monthly pay, which will boost long‑term retirement savings but may temporarily reduce take‑home income. Those previously exempt due to the lower ceiling will now see a portion of their salary directed to the EPF account.

Rationale Behind the Revision

The government says the amendment is intended to broaden social‑security coverage in line with evolving wage patterns. It also acknowledges that the state will shoulder an added fiscal load as a result of the expanded scheme.
