New Delhi – The capital is set to undergo a massive digital transformation of its traffic control infrastructure. The central government has approved a Rs 1,789.52 crore Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) that the Delhi Police will implement, interlinking every existing signal with a real‑time data hub.

Dynamic Signals That Respond to Flow

At the core of the ITMS are intelligent traffic lights. By analysing live vehicle counts, each signal can extend or shorten its green interval to reflect current demand. Heavily travelled corridors receive longer greens, while lightly used streets enjoy reduced waiting times, smoothing movement along the city’s main arteries.

Automated Green Corridors for Emergency Vehicles

When an ambulance, fire‑engine or police car approaches, the system instantly detects the alert and coordinates the lights along its route. This creates a continuous “green corridor” that guides emergency responders through traffic without manual intervention.

Real‑Time Visibility of Congestion and Crashes

The ITMS streams continuous data on vehicle speeds, congestion hotspots and accident locations to traffic controllers. With this insight, officials can divert traffic, dispatch help, or tweak signal timings on the spot, turning reactive management into proactive guidance.

AI‑Enabled Cameras Enforce Road Rules

AI‑powered cameras will monitor streets, automatically identifying violations such as red‑light jumping, stop‑line breaches, overspeeding, wrong‑way travel, riding without helmets, seat‑belt non‑use, illegal parking and mobile‑phone usage while driving.

Data‑Centric Future for Delhi’s Streets

By fusing live traffic feeds, adaptive signalling and AI surveillance, the Rs 1,789.52 crore initiative pushes Delhi beyond a static, signal‑only model. The platform promises quicker journeys, safer roads and unhindered routes for emergency services, heralding a truly intelligent urban traffic ecosystem.
