Escalating Clash Over Form 6 and the Voter‑Roll Overhaul
New Delhi – The political duel between the ruling BJP and the INDIA alliance intensified on Tuesday after the BJP charged the Congress with weaponising a petition filed with the Election Commission. According to the BJP, the opposition’s demand to scrutinise the voter‑registration mechanism is a calculated bid to resurrect Rahul Gandhi’s political relevance.
BJP Rebuts Congress’ Interpretation of Supreme Court Remarks
National spokesperson Sambit Patra argued that the Congress is deliberately twisting the Supreme Court’s observations on Form 6 – the application citizens use to be added to the electoral rolls. Patra clarified that the apex court has not declared the form illegal; it merely ordered a fact‑finding mission into alleged tampering.
Opposition’s Continued Push Against the CEC
Leaders of the INDIA bloc converged on the Election Commission’s Delhi headquarters, seeking answers from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar about the Special Intensive Revision exercise. They contend that changes to Form 6 were implemented without adequate oversight and demand greater transparency.
BJP Denies Any Illegality in the Process
Patra emphasized that the Supreme Court’s notices are procedural, not a verdict of wrongdoing. He cited the Election Commission’s position that the statutory Form 6 remains untouched and that the revision was carried out under decisions already sanctioned by the commission.
Congress’s Counter‑Narrative
The opposition maintains that the purported modifications to Form 6 were irregular and that the CEC acted unilaterally. Rahul Gandhi has framed the dispute as a litmus test of the commission’s impartiality, while Congress calls for an independent audit of the voter‑roll update.
Underlying Motives Behind the Demonstration
Patra suggested that the protest is less about safeguarding electoral integrity and more about giving Rahul Gandhi a stage to re‑emerge on the national scene. He warned that targeting constitutional bodies could become a recurring strategy for the opposition.
With both sides entrenched in their narratives, the Form 6 controversy is poised to dominate political discourse as the next election approaches.
